Whilst on the mend from COVID-19, Liam had been complaining to his mum, May Linn, about constant back pain.

“I saw the lump and I thought he’d just had an accident playing in the park, but he was complaining about it so much,” she explained. “The next Monday, I took him to hospital and the blood tests showed everything.”

The results revealed the shocking diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, news that no child should ever have to hear. The next day, Liam and his family were taken in an emergency taxi from their local hospital to Great Ormond Street hospital to begin treatment.

Liam’s treatment lasted two and a half years, during which he showed incredible strength and resilience.

“He was very positive and he never missed a day of medication or asked me when we were leaving hospital. It was hard for him to see the other kids playing outside but he’s finally getting back to doing the things that other kids can do.” said mum. “He won’t mention it but there’s still a fear of getting ill again.”

It was also hard for his parents to put into words what they were going through, especially when faced with difficult questions from concerned loved ones.

“Liam’s eldest brother asked if Liam was going to die and it was a hard question to answer. Our family members were also worried, so we didn’t share a lot of information and carried on like everything was fine. Some of our friends still don’t know what we were fighting for.”

Throughout his journey, he became more aware of his body and gained better understanding of his pain, which helped him to communicate when something didn’t feel right. He has also learned how important leading a healthy lifestyle is for both physical and mental wellbeing.

After Liam had completed treatment, he was referred to Make-A-Wish by his social worker at referral partner Young Lives vs Cancer.

Whilst Liam was in hospital and unable to do much, his biggest dream was to play football with a professional footballer, so it was no surprise to his family that his wish was also football-themed! He was excited to attend Wishes United, a two-day immersive football experience at St George’s Park, led by Make-A-Wish UK and Premier League footballer Mason Mount. Although he was looking forward to the day, his mum was careful not to reveal too much so that it would be a complete surprise for him!

“Liam is obsessed with football. He’s always doing research and reading, all about football and who has won. He knows all the footballers, as well,” shared mum. “He’s always enjoyed playing football and it’s what gave him the hope and motivation to continue during a difficult time.”

The fun of the day started as soon as Liam stepped out of his own personal taxi, greeted by a cheering crowd of fans! He was then taken on a tour of the famous St George’s Park and attended a press conference in preparation for the Wishes United vs Mascots FC match, which took place the following day, seeing a glorious victory from the Wishes United team!

“He loved every part of it! He loves football so it was more encouragement and motivation to do what he loves.”

Nowadays, Liam is doing much better and is enjoying being active again — playing football most days and taking part in team matches on the weekends.

Reflecting on the impact of the wish overall, mum shared: “This journey has taught us that even in the hardest times, we are not alone. To other families walking this path, stay strong and don’t lose hope. Take it one day at a time. There is light, even when you cannot see it yet. During our most difficult moments, seeing other children ring the bell gave us hope that better days would come. In the same way, we hope Liam’s story can bring comfort, strength, and encouragement to those who are in the position we once faced.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported Liam and our family, especially the doctors, consultants, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, and play specialists. We also thank the Super Skills football coaches, Xoocafe IT team, our community, family and friends, and the wonderful support from his school, including the headteachers and staff.”
