How to hold a virtual pub quiz

If you want a fun way to connect with friends and family online, why not host a virtual pub quiz from the comfort of your own home?

Hosting an online quiz a great way to stay in touch, while at the same time helping to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses, by raising money for Make-A-Wish.

How to host your own virtual pub quiz

1. Create your quiz

There are lots of resources online to help you create your quiz, but here are some tips to ensure it's fun for everyone.

  • Know your audience
If you're holding a family quiz, try and include questions to suit a variety of ages and interests (Aunty Mildred may not be up to date on the biggest grime hits of 2020).
  • Mix it up
Themed rounds are a good way to set out your questions. Popular examples are current affairs, history, food & drink, geography, sport, or entertainment.
  • Get musical
Why not add in a music round, such as name the intro, music from the movies, one hit wonders or what's the next line?
  • Picture it
You could include a picture round, such as name the logo, celebrity or famous album cover.

Your quiz can be as complex as you want, but if you can't be bothered to write your own, we've put together our own quiz below, which you're welcome to download and use.

2. Gather your competitors

Pick a day and time that best suits you and your friends and family to have your virtual get together.

3. Get connected

There are lots of apps available that will allow you to connect online with your friends and family, such as Whatsapp, Skype, FaceTime, Facebook, Zoom, Teams or the House Party App. If you're a technophobe, you could even email your quiz around and set a time limit for the answers to be completed.

4. Grant wishes while you quiz

Set a suggested entry fee and set up a Justgiving fundraising page or ask people to donate via our website. You could ask people to donate what they would normally spend on a couple of drinks if they were taking part in their local pub quiz.

Make the quiz more fun by asking people to take part in fancy dress and award a prize for the best costume.

5. Share the love

Don’t forget to take some photos of your virtual quiz and share them on social media using @makeawishuk so we can see what you've been getting up to!
