Latest Wishes - Alice purrs with delight at bedroom makeover

Alice relaxes in her new bedroom

Make-A-Wish was delighted to grant the wish of nine year old Alice, who has had to have a kidney transplant – she wished for a special bedroom makeover.....

Alice from Hartlepool lives with Chronic Renal Failure, a progressive loss of kidney function. Her condition has required her to have a kidney transplant and a Mitrofanoff tube inserted into her appendix to allow her to empty her bladder, which she has to do herself several times a day. Alice also has a weak immune system, suffers from seizures and whilst in surgery was also found to have a malformation in her brain which required additional surgery.

As a result of all her medical treatment, Alice needs to spend a lot of time in her bedroom – so when we approached her to ask what her special wish would be, after toying with the idea of a holiday she eventually settled on something that would last a bit longer than that.

She decided that she wanted the perfect place to relax, feel special and hang out with her friends – so the Make-A-Wish team set to work, transforming her bedroom into a pink-themed shrine to Japanese character Hello Kitty, as you can see in our picture.

Alice is thrilled with her new room and her Mum Nicole had this to say about it all: “Alice is fiercely independent but, having had to be looked after for so long, her bedroom has become very important to her to help maintain her independence. She’s told everyone about it and can’t wait to get under the duvet. Thank you Make-A-Wish, this will make such a difference!”

In 2010, around 1,000 children will turn to Make-A-Wish to have their special wish granted. We need to raise £5 million this year in order to continue granting these magical wishes. Please help us to grant more magical wishes by making a donation today
