We are committed to giving our volunteers the best experience possible and we believe that the volunteer relationship is one of honour, trust and mutual understanding.
Here’s a summary of what we expect from our volunteers and what you can expect from us. For more information, please read our volunteering handbook.
Our expectations of volunteers:
- To maintain and uphold the good name and reputation of the charity.
- Consider as confidential all information that they may hear directly or indirectly concerning wish families, donors, staff, or other volunteers.
- Be willing to learn and to participate in training and meetings.
- To take part in at least one volunteering activity per month (subject to opportunities being available).
- To co-operate with paid members of staff, to listen and learn from what they have to say to achieve the aims of the charity.
- Complete requests & projects promptly, reliably and professionally within the service level agreements.
- To notify manager in a timely manner if it is not possible to meet a commitment as planned.
- Communicate problems and concerns so they may be discussed and resolved.
- Encourage two-way communication with other volunteers and paid staff, fostering a pleasant and friendly atmosphere.
- Support the charity’s equal opportunities and diversity policy and help promote the diversity of its staff and supporters.
- To take reasonable care of their own health and safety whilst volunteering and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
- To accept that the ultimate responsibility for the affairs of the charity rest with the charity’s Trustees and management.
Make-A-Wish responsibilities:
- To match the needs of the charity with the skills, knowledge, experience and motivation of the volunteer.
- To respect volunteers, listen and learn from what they have to say, consistently encouraging two-way communication.
- To ensure volunteers receive appropriate training and support to help them deliver in their roles.
- To ensure paid staff are trained to work with volunteers.
- To ensure volunteers have a clear understanding of task expectations, including duties, responsibilities, support structure, and time commitment
- To ensure volunteer time is used wisely.
- To provide timely and accurate information about the charity’s work, policies and procedures.
- To celebrate success and recognise loyalty and dedication.
- To make financial and other provisions in management plans for the needs of volunteers.
- To ensure every volunteer has access to a member of paid staff to guide and advise them.
- Try to resolve fairly any complaints or grievances.
- To ensure volunteers can to freely discuss problems, ask questions, or make suggestions.
- To ensure the health, safety and welfare of all Make-A-Wish volunteers whilst undertaking their volunteering activities
