FAQs

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Volunteering can be a lot of fun and it's a great way of meeting new people in your local area. You will learn new skills and build up valuable work experience while donating your time and talent to a good cause. Whatever your motivation, you can be sure that your efforts will make a real contribution to the work of
Make-A-Wish.

Who volunteers for Make-A-Wish?

We welcome people from all walks of life. Students volunteer to gain skills and work experience to help them get a job in later life while others work full-time but wish to volunteer at evenings or weekends. Some of our volunteers have had a break from the job market and want to build up fresh experience and we also have many retired people who are looking to put their experience and some of their newfound free time to good use.

Is there any age restriction to becoming a volunteer?

To volunteer for Make-A-Wish, you must be aged 18 or over.

How much time do I have to give?

The beauty of volunteering for Make-A-Wish is flexibility; you can plan volunteering around your other commitments. We have a range of volunteer roles from full-time placements to one-off events. Take a look at the different roles we have available (you don't have to pick just one) and choose those that suit you best.

Is there an interview process?

Yes, there is a telephone interview which gives us the chance to tell you a little more about Make-A-Wish and the different volunteering roles and flexibility which exist within the charity. The telephone call also gives us both the opportunity to ask questions and agree that volunteering for Make-A-Wish will match both your and our needs and expectations.

On successful completion of the telephone interview, we will apply for your references and discuss next steps; these will include meeting a local mentor and training.

Do I receive any training?

Once you have been accepted as a volunteer into a specific role you will receive general training on the work of the charity and specific training for the role which you have chosen to carry out on the behalf of Make-A-Wish.

What expenses are covered?

All expenses which arise from volunteering for Make-A-Wish will be covered. These typically will include travel on behalf of the charity and in some cases refreshments. If you are claiming state benefits you can still volunteer without affecting these payments.
