Four year old Marcel from Belfast lives with Cerebral Palsy and severe learning difficulties, and loves watching Mr Tumble's programmes on CBeebies. His twin brother Andre also lives with these afflictions and recently had his own wish granted, to own some sensory equipment which would make his life easier and more fun. It turned out that the equipment was something that both boys could enjoy – and likewise Andre was also there to enjoy Marcel’s wish, which was to meet recently-appointed
Make-A-Wish Patron Justin Fletcher, aka CBeebies’ Mr Tumble.
We flew the boys and their Mum over to London from Belfast and, after they had seen a few of the sights, the family was picked up by limo from their hotel to meet Mr Tumble for afternoon tea. Justin sat in character with both boys, communicating in special sign-language Makaton and singing a collection of songs from hit programmes ‘Something Special’ and ‘Gigglebiz’.
Both boys responded really well to Mr Tumble, recognising his voice instantly and giggling away contently for the whole time that he was there.
Mum Jean said that she had been very worried about travelling over from Belfast with the boys, as it can be stressful and hard work – but when she saw the look on Marcel’s face and how it lit up as he met Mr Tumble, she felt that the whole journey was worth it:
“To work for Make-A-Wish you have to display compassion and kindness and you absolutely succeed in this. You couldn’t have done more for my two boys and you recognised how special they are without passing judgment. I thank Make-A-Wish from the bottom of my heart.”
A chocolate-themed Ball raising money for Make-A-Wish.
Lovers of chocolate have Hans Sloane to thank for the recipe which well-known chocolate manufacturers and Make-A-Wish supporters Cadbury have used for many years, right to the present day. This year Hans is celebrated with the first ever Hans Sloane Chocolate Ball, on a Saturday night in the grounds of Killyleagh Castle (dress: Milk, Dark or White Tie, of course!). This lavish ball will take place under a marquee and everything from dinner and drink to décor will be dedicated to chocolate. Live entertainment comes from the ’Supreme Dream Girls’ from Detroit and ‘Cuban Heels’ and a Grand Charity Auction will raise funds for Make-A-Wish.
Tickets cost £100 per person and can be bought from the Ball Secretary, Liz Rea – telephone 028 4482 8229 or email liz@roskyle.co.uk.
