Ways to Volunteer
Listed below are some of the key roles which Make-A-Wish needs volunteers to help with:
Wish Visitor
Purpose:
To visit the wish child in their home and ascertain what their true wish is and why they would like it to be granted.
Skills:
- Good verbal communication with children, young people and parents
- Ability to cope with what may be distressing information and situations
- Excellent listening and report writing skills
- Ability to remain sensitive and patient in difficult situations
Wish Planner
Purpose:
To assist in the planning of a wish by providing local knowledge and helping with activities as part of the preparation for the wish day. The activities involved will vary considerably depending on the wish being granted.
Skills:
- Good knowledge of local businesses e.g. landscape gardeners, specialist stores etc.
- Ability to work on your own
- Good organisational skills
Collection Box Agent
Purpose:
To fundraise for Make-A-Wish by taking responsibility for a defined and agreed local area and work towards the placing of as many collection boxes as possible.
Skills:
- Knowledge of local shops, businesses and tourist attractions will be helpful
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Availability during normal business hours to make visits to outlets
- Comfortable with handling, counting and banking money
Public Speaker
Purpose:
To act as a public representative of Make-A-Wish in the local community, presenting to a wide variety of professional and community organisations, including schools.
Skills:
- Some experience of speaking in public settings
- Able to vary presentation style and demonstrate empathy with diverse audiences
- Will deliver the key messages and information provided by Make-A-Wish
- Respects others' opinions, beliefs and points of view
Promotional Agent
Purpose:
To help raise awareness of Make-A-Wish by acting as a representative of the charity at promotional events, shows and other similar activities.
Skills:
- Confident with dealing with members of the public
- Excellent communication skills
- Imaginative and enthusiastic
- Well organised and punctual
