Is there any age restriction to becoming a volunteer?
To volunteer for Make-A-Wish, you must be aged 18 or over.
Is there an interview process?
The application process begins with a short telephone call which gives us the chance to tell you a little more about Make-A-Wish, the different volunteering roles which exist within the charity and the volunteering positions we are looking to fill in your local area. The telephone call also gives us both the opportunity to ask questions and agree that volunteering for Make-A-Wish will match both your and our needs and expectations.
On successful completion of the telephone interview, we will ask you to complete an application form and return it to us together with the names of two referees. If you are intending to get involved with wish granting, you will also be asked to provide information for a police criminal records check.
Do I receive any training?
Once you have been accepted as a volunteer into a specific role you will receive general training on the work of the charity and specific training for the role which you have chosen to carry out on the behalf of Make-A-Wish.
What expenses are covered?
All expenses which arise from volunteering for Make-A-Wish will be covered. These typically will include travel on behalf of the charity and in some cases refreshments. If you are claiming state benefits you can still volunteer without affecting these payments.
Jodie from Leicester wanted to get more young people involved with Make-A-Wish. Working as a Guider, she came up with the idea of a badge called the Wish Challenge. The aim of the badge is to raise awareness of Make-A-Wish and for children to discover the magic of wishes. The children earn their badges by completing a series of wish-related activities. To date, more than 5,000 children have registered for the challenge.
Jodie says: “I am thrilled with the success of the Wish Challenge, especially as it is making so many young people aware of the work of Make-A-Wish.”
