Olivia loves her new sensory room

Olivia

Four year old Olivia from Paisley caught Meningitis when she was just 20 days old and, as a result, she now has a profound neurological disability which causes a lot of pain and affects her sleep. When she also recently caught Swine Flu, Mum Kerry decided enough was enough and applied to Make-A-Wish for some help.

Kerry and her husband Derrick asked us to create a sensory room for Olivia at the family home in St Margaret’s Court. The room features a bubble tube which emits different coloured lights designed to soothe and encourage eye contact, as well as some striking fibre-optics.

“Olivia has been in and out of hospital and has to make regular trips to Robin House in Balloch,” said Kerry. “I knew a sensory room would help her enormously, so I was delighted when Make-A-Wish agreed to our appeal for help.

“It’s all about relaxation. Olivia responds well to the colours in the room and it’s her own wee space.

“She’s an amazing girl, especially when you consider what she’s had to face so far in her young life.”

Since Make-A-Wish stepped in to transform a room into a glowing haven of light and colour to stimulate Olivia’s senses and help her to sleep more soundly, life has been a little easier for the family.

Kerry said: “Olivia is able to kick out now because all the furnishings are soft. She can get rid of her frustrations.

“The room has made a massive difference and I’m so grateful to the people at Make-A-Wish.”
